**Meta Ray-Ban Display** is a pair of display-equipped [AI glasses](/wiki/ai_glasses) from Meta, announced on 2025-09-17 at Meta Connect 2025 and sold in the United States from 2025-09-30 at a starting price of $799 that includes the [Meta Neural Band](/wiki/meta_neural_band), a wrist-worn surface electromyography controller [1]. It is Meta's first consumer product with a screen in the lens. A monocular full-color liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCoS) light engine in the right temple feeds a geometric reflective [waveguide](/wiki/waveguide_display) designed by Lumus and manufactured by SCHOTT, producing a 600 x 600 pixel image across a 20 degree diagonal field of view [2][3][4]. Meta's own materials place the company name first, as Meta Ray-Ban Display, inverting the Ray-Ban Meta branding used for the camera-only glasses, whose camera sensor the Display reuses [1][3].

Ten months after launch the product was still sold only in the United States, and only through in-person demo appointments. A planned expansion to the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Canada was paused on 2026-01-06, which Meta attributed to "unprecedented demand and limited inventory" [11]. Meta has never published a unit sales figure. The two analyst estimates in circulation cover essentially the same window and differ by more than a factor of five.

## Announcement and launch

Meta unveiled the glasses at Meta Connect on 2025-09-17 alongside the Neural Band, and put them on sale thirteen days later on 2025-09-30 [1]. Launch retail was US-only through selected Best Buy, LensCrafters, Sunglass Hut and Ray-Ban stores, with Verizon locations following [1]. Meta said at announcement that Canada, France, Italy and the United Kingdom would follow in early 2026 [1].

Two live demonstrations failed on stage during the keynote, with [Mark Zuckerberg](/wiki/mark_zuckerberg) present for both. Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth later explained that a cooking segment failed because triggering Live AI in the venue "started every single Ray-Ban Meta's Live AI in the building", overwhelming a development server that Meta had routed traffic to, and that a WhatsApp video call to the Display failed because of a race condition in which the screen went to sleep exactly as the call arrived [10]. Bosworth said "I don't love it, but I know the product works. I know it has the goods. So it really was just a demo fail and not, like, a product failure" [10].

## Hardware

The optical approach is what separates the Display from the rest of Meta's glasses line. It uses a geometric reflective waveguide: a stack of partially reflective mirrors embedded in glass that bounce light out toward the eye at specific angles [7]. SCHOTT argues that geometric reflective waveguides beat the competing AR optical technologies on light and energy efficiency, which is what makes all-day wear in a normal-looking frame possible [4]. iFixit's teardown described the result as "a very clean, very effective solution" whose "only downside is it's an expensive piece of glass" [7]. One practical consequence is the absence of forward "eye glow", the leakage that makes some [augmented reality](/wiki/augmented_reality) eyewear visibly lit to bystanders [8].

The waveguide itself has an identifiable supply chain. Lumus designs the geometric reflective architecture and SCHOTT mass-produces the optics, a division of labor SCHOTT announced on 2025-09-29, the day before the glasses went on sale [4]. Ruediger Sprengard, SCHOTT's senior vice president for augmented reality, called industrial production of geometric reflective waveguides "nothing less than adding a crucial missing puzzle piece to the AR technology landscape" [4]. iFixit identified the LCoS panel as an OmniVision OP03010 and the SoC as a [Snapdragon AR1](/wiki/snapdragon_ar1) from [Qualcomm](/wiki/qualcomm) [7].

## Meta Neural Band

The glasses ship with, and are controlled by, the Meta Neural Band, a fabric wristband that reads surface electromyography signals and "translates the signals created by your muscle activity into commands" [1]. Meta rates it at up to 18 hours of battery, IPX7 water resistance, and offers three sizes; the strap is made from Vectran, the same fiber Meta says was used in Mars rover crash pads [1]. The $799 price covers both devices and Meta does not break out a separate band price [1]. Because the band is the only precise input method, a Display owner charges and wears two devices rather than one, a tradeoff UploadVR flagged in its review [3].

## Buying one

Meta did not sell the Display the way it sells its other glasses. Buyers had to schedule an in-person demo that doubled as a fitting for the two frame sizes and three band sizes, then purchase in store [1][5]. Road to VR reported on 2025-10-01 that most retailer locations showed no appointments available until 1 December, with some slots open at Meta's own Meta Lab pop-ups, which opened in Las Vegas on 2025-10-16, Los Angeles on 2025-10-24 and New York on 2025-11-13 [5]. Verizon began scheduling demos on 2025-10-24 at six stores, in Nanuet, New York; Laguna Niguel, California; Queen Creek, Arizona; Cypress Mill, Texas; Murfreesboro, Tennessee; and Canton, Ohio, with demos starting 2025-11-05 [6]. In May 2026 Meta was still pointing prospective buyers at "available retail demo slots in the US" [17].

## Software after launch

Meta shipped features to the Display steadily through 2026, documented in its public AI glasses release notes [16].

The navigation restriction eased over time. It launched geofenced to 28 US cities, went to 32 at CES 2026, and by Meta's six-month update on 2026-05-14 walking directions covered the entire United States plus major international cities including London, Paris and Rome for travelers [3][11][17]. That six-month post gave no usage or sales numbers, only qualitative claims that "visual Meta AI answers see higher engagement rates" [17].

## Developer access

Until May 2026 the Display ran only Meta's own software; UploadVR's review noted flatly that "there is no applet store on Meta Ray-Ban Display" [3]. Meta opened two developer paths on 2026-05-14, both labeled developer previews [18]. The Wearable Device Access Toolkit lets an existing iOS (Swift) or Android (Kotlin) app extend onto the glasses using display components such as text, images, lists, buttons and video. Web Apps is a separate stack in which pages written in HTML, CSS and JavaScript run natively on the glasses, with access to motion and orientation data, phone GPS, Neural Band input and local storage [18]. Testing was capped at 100 testers, with Web Apps shared through password-protected URLs and toolkit builds through release channels [18].

Because Web Apps are self-hosted on any HTTPS host and added by pasting a URL into phone settings, there is no store and no review queue. Within a month developers had published a GPS-based running app called Ghost Run, simplified YouTube, TikTok and Twitch clients, a smart-home control demo, a reader-mode browser, and a port of the 1993 game DOOM [19].

## The paused international expansion

On 2026-01-06, the same day it announced the teleprompter and handwriting features at CES, Meta cancelled the early-2026 international rollout. Its blog post read: "Because of this unprecedented demand and limited inventory, we've decided to pause our planned international expansion to the UK, France, Italy, and Canada, which was originally scheduled for early 2026. We'll continue to focus on fulfilling orders in the US while we re-evaluate our approach to international availability" [11]. Reuters quoted a Meta statement the same day that "Since launching last fall, we've seen an overwhelming amount of interest, and as a result, product waitlists now extend well into 2026" [12].

Road to VR, covering the reversal on 2026-01-07, noted that stock was "extremely limited" and that Meta had given no replacement schedule [13]. As of 2026-08-01 none of the four markets had received the product and Meta had announced no new date. Its most recent status update, in May 2026, still described availability in terms of US retail demo slots [17].

## Sales estimates

Meta has published no unit figure for the Display at any point [17]. Two analyst estimates exist, they are not reconcilable, and each carries a provenance caveat.

Neither firm has put the underlying data in public view. The IDC figure comes from a Reuters wire story of 2026-01-06, cited here from its Yahoo syndication [12]. The 84,000 figure comes from an Omdia press release of 2026-03-05, cited here from an outlet that reproduced the release text verbatim [21]. In the same release Omdia put total 2025 AI glasses shipments at 8.7 million units, of which display-equipped models were 8.4% (730,000 units, up from a 3.3% share in 2024), and Meta's overall AI glasses shipments at 7.4 million units, growth of 281.3% [21].

The two figures also measure different things in their own wording. Reuters describes IDC's number as units Meta sold, a sell-through measure; Omdia describes its number as units shipped, which counts stock moved into the channel. Since the glasses went on sale on 2025-09-30, both windows cover essentially the same quarter. Neither firm has published a reconciliation, and Meta has not commented on either estimate.

## Supply chain and production

TrendForce reported on 2026-01-30 that Meta's order with Lumus for geometric waveguides had risen from around 80,000 units at launch to 150,000 units, an increase of 87.5% within six months, and that Meta was targeting 500,000 units shipped within two years [15]. TrendForce named the same four suppliers visible in the teardown: Lumus for the waveguide, OmniVision for the LCoS panel, GoerOptics for optical engine assembly, and SCHOTT for waveguide optics [15]. Its forecast for AR glasses as a whole was 950,000 units in 2026, up 53% year on year, reaching 32.11 million by 2030 [15].

Capacity expansion at the wider Meta glasses line ran in parallel. Road to VR, summarizing a Bloomberg report of 2026-01-13, wrote that Meta was aiming to raise annual smart glasses production capacity to about 20 million units by the end of 2026, and potentially past 30 million if demand held, against an earlier [EssilorLuxottica](/wiki/essilorluxottica) target of 10 million [14].

## Reception and criticism

UploadVR's David Heaney reviewed the glasses on 2025-11-10 after about a month of daily wear and was positive on the Neural Band and the concept while hard on the execution [3]. The monocular display, he wrote, produced "a constant minor feeling of eyestrain", and some people he handed the glasses to "found it hurt their eyes within seconds" [3]. The absence of cellular meant everything ran over a Bluetooth link to the phone, which he judged inadequate: WhatsApp messages that appear on a phone "within a fraction of a second" took "upwards of 10 seconds" on the glasses, "while media can take over a minute", and the video-call view "was pixelated and exhibited constant stuttering" [3]. He also criticized the geofenced navigation, noting "it's a rare product where core functionality is geofenced to a handful of cities", the lack of notification mirroring, the requirement to charge and wear a second device, and the glossy finish, which he said made the glasses "look cheap in a way that an $800 product really shouldn't" [3]. The ambiguity of a heads-up display that bystanders cannot see also cuts into the [social and privacy questions](/wiki/smart_glasses_privacy) raised by camera glasses generally: companions can eventually tell a wearer is reading the HUD, but as Heaney put it, "it's far more ambiguous" than looking at a phone [3].

iFixit tore the glasses down on 2025-10-08 and concluded that "nothing about this build invites tinkering" [7]. Each arm is sealed shut with glue, "making entry a game of heat, patience, and luck", and the glue "feels like overkill for an IPX4 water rating, and one careless move can shear off the delicate ribbon cable underneath" [7]. iFixit did not expect replacement waveguides to be offered if the glass cracks, and urged Meta to move to replaceable batteries, modular arms and swappable lenses in later generations [7][8]. Road to VR's read of the same teardown was slightly less bleak: the 960 mWh battery can in principle be reached by splitting the right arm along its glued seam, at the cost of the IPX4 rating, though "all of the components are custom, and replacement parts aren't available yet" [9]. Its writer argued that real repairability will not arrive "until we get to the sort of sales volumes currently seen in smartphones" [9].
