How AI usage limits work
Neither OpenAI nor Anthropic publishes a universal reset clock. Both meter subscriptions with account-specific windows: a short session window measured in hours plus, on most paid plans, a weekly cap. Your account's own usage screen is the only authoritative source for your next reset time, which is why this tracker asks you to copy the time your provider shows you instead of guessing it.
For Claude and Claude Code, every plan meters sessions on a rolling 5-hour window, which Anthropic's help center long described as starting with your first message. Paid plans add weekly limits that reset at a fixed time each week assigned to your account, shown in Settings > Usage on claude.ai or by running /usage in Claude Code. Claude, Claude Code, and Cowork all draw from the same subscription allowance.

What is a banked reset?
A banked reset is a stored full usage reset that OpenAI credits to Codex accounts as a bonus or an apology after incidents. It sits on the account until the user redeems it from the desktop app, web, or mobile, and redeeming it replenishes the weekly usage allowance. Reset credits show a type and an expiration date in the Codex CLI. The Codex history on this page tags those announcements as banked resets.
Do these limits apply to API keys?
No. API access is metered separately with rate limits, such as requests and tokens per minute that scale with usage tiers, and it is billed per token from prepaid credits or invoices. The 5-hour and weekly windows tracked on this page apply to subscription plans used through the apps, the web interfaces, Claude Code, and Codex.
Why do providers reset limits outside the normal schedule?
Three reasons dominate the archived announcements: recovery after bugs or incidents that consumed usage unfairly, product launches such as Anthropic resetting all windows when the Claude 5 family shipped in June 2026, and time-limited promotions such as doubled session usage or increased weekly caps.
Can I buy more usage instead of waiting for a reset?
Often, yes. Claude Pro and Max subscribers can enable usage credits that bill extra usage at standard API rates once included limits run out, and Team or Enterprise owners can enable them for their organizations. OpenAI sells Codex credits to Plus and Pro users from the usage dashboard. Buying extra usage does not move your reset times: the underlying windows keep their normal schedule.
Do Gemini or GitHub Copilot have reset schedules too?
Yes, and theirs are more deterministic. Since May 17, 2026 the Gemini app refreshes its allowance every 5 hours under a weekly cap, much like Claude's windows, while Gemini API and Gemini CLI daily request quotas follow Google's platform rule of resetting at midnight Pacific Time. GitHub Copilot's monthly AI credit allowance resets at 00:00:00 UTC on the first day of each calendar month, with no rollover of unused credits.
Is this tracker connected to my account?
No. Countdown times you enter are stored only in your browser's local storage and never leave your device. AI Wiki has no access to your OpenAI or Anthropic account, and the tool works without signing in to anything.
