AI² Robotics (also written AI2 Robotics; Chinese: 智平方科技, Zhipingfang) is a Chinese robotics company founded in April 2023 and headquartered in Shenzhen's Nanshan District. It builds the AlphaBot line of wheeled mobile manipulators and the Alpha Brain family of vision-language-action models, and sells into industrial and commercial service settings. It has no connection whatsoever to the Allen Institute for AI, the Seattle nonprofit research organization that is also commonly abbreviated "AI2" and that publishes the OLMo and Molmo open models; the two organizations share an abbreviation and nothing else. On 2026-06-29 the company said it had closed a series of financings totaling nearly CNY 5 billion at a valuation above CNY 20 billion, which Chinese outlets described as the first embodied-AI company in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to pass that mark [1][2][3].

Company and leadership

Corporate records summarized by Baidu Baike give an establishment date of 2023-04-17 for the operating entity, and the company's own English site states April 2023 [4][5]. Chinese venture press describes the company as founded "in early 2023" and notes that it closed an angel round within three months of incorporation, backed by SEE Fund, Tsingzhi Capital (清智资本) and SDIC Chuangying (国投创盈) [6][3].

Founder and CEO Yandong Guo (郭彦东) took bachelor's and master's degrees at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, completed a PhD in electrical and computer engineering at Purdue University in 2013 under Jan Allebach and Charles Bouman, then worked as a researcher at Microsoft in Seattle before serving as chief scientist at OPPO and at XPeng Motors [6]. The company describes its technical staff as drawn from Microsoft, Google, OPPO, XPeng, Momenta, Tsinghua University, Peking University, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Carnegie Mellon and UC Berkeley, a claim it has not substantiated with headcount figures [5].

In April 2026 the company converted to joint-stock form as 智平方(深圳)科技股份有限公司, the standard preparatory step for a mainland or Hong Kong listing. Cailianshe reported the change on 2026-04-11 and dated it only to "recently"; management said it had no capital-markets path it could disclose [7]. The company's public position on a listing traces to Guo's September 2025 interview with Reuters, in which he said he hoped to take the company public within one to two years; The Robot Report relayed that line again in February 2026 [23][8].

AlphaBot

AlphaBot is not a biped. Every generation to date has put a humanoid upper body, meaning a torso, two arms and a sensor head, on a wheeled mobile base with a lifting waist and leg column that raises and lowers the torso. Describing it simply as a "humanoid robot" overstates the hardware; "wheeled humanoid" or "mobile manipulator" is accurate. Both English trade outlets that covered the June 2026 round use the precise framing: The Robot Report calls it "a wheeled mobile manipulator equipped with a humanoid torso and nimble five-fingered hands" that "can't climb stairs or traverse rugged terrain", and SiliconANGLE describes "a wheeled platform with a humanoid torso" [1][2].

The first AlphaBot appeared in July 2024. An upgraded AlphaBot 1S was shown at the World Robot Conference in Beijing in August 2024, with roughly 50 percent more joints and about three times as many sensors as the first unit, and deliveries promised for the fourth quarter of 2024 [9]. AlphaBot 2 launched on 2025-04-17 [10].

One widely repeated English figure needs care. SiliconANGLE's June 2026 report described AlphaBot as having "an arm span of about 2.3 feet" [2]. That is an accurate conversion of 700 mm, but the Chinese spec sheet gives 700 mm as 单臂臂展(不含末端夹具), the reach of a single arm excluding the end effector, not the robot's shoulder-to-fingertip span across both arms [11]. Read as an overall span, 2.3 feet would be implausibly small; read as a single-arm reach, it is unremarkable for a manipulator of this class. The Robot Report's own coverage of the same round carries no arm figure at all. The company has not published a payload rating in the launch material reviewed here.

The wheeled-base choice is the company's central hardware bet. Coverage of the June 2026 round reports the company framing it as a deliberate trade of legged mobility for industrial-grade stability, speed and safety, and for a lighter regulatory burden than bipeds face in occupied workspaces [2]. That framing is the company's own; no independent safety-certification data has been published.

Alongside the robots, AI² Robotics sells 智魔方 ("Smart Cube"), a modular enclosed service space in which an AlphaBot works as a vendor or attendant. The first units opened at Beijing's Chaoyang Park and Shenzhen's MixC mall in December 2025 [4]. The company has said it plans 1,000 of them across China within three years [3], and by mid-2026 described the format as operating in more than ten provinces [12].

Alpha Brain, GOVLA and NeuroVLA

The model stack has been renamed more than once. The 2024 robots ran what the company called AI2R Brain [9]. From the AlphaBot 2 launch onward the consumer-facing name is Alpha Brain, and the technical designation is GOVLA, for Global and Omni-body vision-language-action [10][8]. The company maps its own version history as GOVLA 0.0 (the RoboMamba work, built on a Mamba state-space backbone), GOVLA 0.5 (FiS-VLA) and GOVLA 1.0 [6].

FiS-VLA is the one component with a real, checkable paper. "Fast-in-Slow: A Dual-System Foundation Model Unifying Fast Manipulation within Slow Reasoning" was posted to arXiv on 2025-06-02 (arXiv:2506.01953) by authors affiliated with the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Peking University, AI²Robotics and the Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence; Yandong Guo is among the authors [13]. It was accepted to NeurIPS 2025 as a poster [21]. The design embeds a fast "System 1" controller inside the final transformer blocks of the vision-language model that serves as the slow "System 2", sharing parameters rather than bolting on a separate action head. In the authors' own experiments it reports 69 percent average success on RLBench against 55 percent for π0 and 61 percent for CogACT, at 21.9 Hz versus 13.8 Hz and 9.8 Hz; in real-world trials it reports 68 percent versus 59 percent on an AgileX dual-arm platform and 74 percent versus 61 percent on AlphaBot [14]. Those are author-run comparisons, not third-party evaluation, and the AlphaBot results are run on the company's own hardware.

Two promotional claims on the company's site do not survive contact with the paper. The site states that FiS-VLA "outperformed the international benchmark π0 by 30%" and invokes an endorsement from Turing Award laureate Yann LeCun [5]. The paper's headline improvement over prior state of the art is 8 percent in simulation and 11 percent in the real world on average success rate; no 30 percent figure appears in it [13]. The LeCun reference is described in Chinese sources as attention paid to the earlier RoboMamba work rather than an endorsement of the product [4], and should be treated as marketing.

On 2026-06-13, at the Beijing Zhiyuan Conference, Guo announced NeuroVLA, which the company calls the world's first brain-inspired embodied intelligence system, and said it had been open-sourced on an "AlphaBrain Platform" [15][12]. The architecture is described as three layers modeled on cortex, cerebellum and spinal cord: semantic understanding and task planning at the top, high-frequency motion coordination in the middle, and millisecond-scale execution and safety reflexes at the bottom. Chinese trade coverage relaying the company's presentation cites a reduction in motion jitter of more than 75 percent, a post-collision reflex within 20 milliseconds, and average power draw of about 0.4 watts for the lowest layer, which runs a spiking neural network [22]. No paper, model card or independent reproduction of those figures was available as of 2026-07-27. NeuroVLA and the AlphaBrain Platform were shown again at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai on 2026-07-17 [16].

Funding

The company says it completed twelve financing rounds inside a single year [3][6]. The rounds below are the ones with dated, specific reporting.

Baidu is the most prominent technology investor on the list. The June 2026 round is unusual for how much of it comes from state vehicles and from industrial corporates with no robotics business of their own, including a pharmaceutical group, a contract research organization and a distillery.

Reconciling the reported valuations

English coverage of the June 2026 round produced figures that look incompatible: The Robot Report headlined "$735M at $3B valuation" [1], while SiliconANGLE reported the round as pushing the valuation "beyond 50 billion RMB, or about $2.8 billion" [2]. They resolve as follows.

The underlying Chinese announcement contains exactly two numbers, repeated verbatim across Chinese financial outlets: 融资总额近50亿元人民币, a financing total of nearly CNY 5 billion, and 估值飙升至超200亿元, a valuation risen above CNY 20 billion [3]. Sina's own gloss on the first is 约7亿美元, about USD 700 million.

The "50 billion RMB" valuation is an error, and it is not SiliconANGLE's alone. The Robot Report's body text carries the same wording: it says the company "raised about $735 million in a fresh financing round that pushed its valuation past 50 billion RMB, or about $2.8 billion U.S." [1]. Both outlets appear to have taken 近50亿元, the funding total, mistaken it for the valuation, and then read 亿 (one hundred million) as though it meant "billion". Fifty billion yuan would be roughly USD 7.4 billion, which is neither what any Chinese source reports nor what either outlet's own "$2.8 billion" gloss implies. SiliconANGLE attributes the $735 million figure itself to a Bloomberg report [2].

The dollar figures are the reliable part, and the gap between them is a foreign-exchange artifact rather than a disagreement about the round. USD/CNY stood at 6.7940 on 2026-06-29, the day of the announcement, and at 6.7595 on 2026-06-17 [18]. At 6.79, CNY 5 billion is about USD 736 million and CNY 20 billion is about USD 2.94 billion, which is where The Robot Report's headline figures of $735M and $3B come from. At the older 7.15 that English coverage of Chinese rounds often carries over, CNY 20 billion gives USD 2.80 billion, which is the figure in SiliconANGLE's headline and, confusingly, in The Robot Report's own body. The "$2.8 billion versus $3 billion" spread is therefore mostly internal to a single article. On the underlying facts the sources agree: nearly CNY 5 billion raised, valuation above CNY 20 billion, company registered and headquartered in Shenzhen [2][4].

One further caution. Coverage of 2026-06-29 bundled AI² Robotics with X Square Robot (自变量机器人), which announced four consecutive rounds culminating in a Series C at a comparable valuation the same day [2]. They are separate companies with separate models: X Square's are the WALL series, including the open-source Wall-OSS, running on its QUANTA X2 platform. Alpha Brain, GOVLA and NeuroVLA belong to AI² Robotics; WALL does not.

Commercialization

The company's largest disclosed commitment was announced jointly on 2025-09-11 with Shenzhen Intelligence IoT Technology Service, a subsidiary of display panel maker HKC (惠科): over 1,000 robots deployed across HKC's global production bases over three years, at a stated value of close to CNY 500 million, covering warehousing and logistics, material loading and unloading, component assembly, and quality inspection. Named tasks include PCB handling, OLED vacuum lamination, consumables management and waste recycling. The parties described it as a strategic partnership rather than a purchase order [19]. The implied unit economics, roughly CNY 500,000 per robot including services, are high for the sector and have drawn scrutiny.

Earlier, on 2025-06-07, AI² Robotics and Dongfeng Liuzhou Motor signed a strategic cooperation agreement in Shenzhen under which AlphaBot 2 (Chinese product name 爱宝, Aibao) entered the carmaker's plant for material loading and unloading, towing material carts, windshield labeling and protective-cloth application, spanning quality inspection, assembly, in-plant logistics and plant maintenance [24].

Production claims have moved. Chinese coverage in early 2026 described an in-house line capable of about 1,000 units a year with a target of 10,000-unit scale [6][17], while the AlphaBot 2 launch framed the goal as 10,000 units deployed in real scenarios by 2028 and one million by 2033 [10]. Those are capacity plans and deployment targets rather than shipments. The company has not published cumulative delivery counts or revenue; the closest figure in Chinese coverage is PEdaily's report that monthly deliveries reached the hundred-unit level in December 2025 [6].

Reception and open questions

A skeptical analysis published by NetEase Finance asked directly whether the industrial order book supports a CNY 20 billion valuation [20]. Its points are worth recording because AI² Robotics has not rebutted them publicly. The HKC agreement is structured as strategic cooperation without disclosed payment terms or a firm delivery schedule. Qualifying a humanoid or mobile manipulator into a production line in China typically runs three to six months of proof of concept, then small-batch testing usually under 50 units per plant, then roughly a year of long-term verification before 50 to 100 unit trial deployments, a cycle of about two years before meaningful revenue. Peer shipment numbers remain small: the piece cites UBTECH delivering more than 500 Walker S2 units in 2025. And the full-stack model-plus-hardware position that AI² Robotics markets as its differentiator is no longer distinctive, with X Square Robot and Galbot pursuing overlapping strategies and world models posing a live architectural challenge to the VLA approach.

The company's move into consumer-facing service formats, the Smart Cube kiosks and the coffee, ice cream and cocktail demonstrations shown at WAIC, reads either as broadening the addressable market or as hedging against slow industrial adoption, depending on which case one accepts [16][20].

Position in China's humanoid sector

AI² Robotics sits in a crowded field. Unitree Robotics dominates on unit volume and price with legged platforms; AgiBot and UBTECH pursue bipedal industrial humanoids; Galbot and X Square Robot, like AI² Robotics, chose wheeled bases and put their emphasis on the robot foundation model rather than locomotion. Among these, AI² Robotics is one of the few with a peer-reviewed manipulation paper and a named industrial anchor customer, and one of the few to have skipped legs entirely from the first product. Its financing pace, twelve rounds inside a single year and a valuation that doubled from above CNY 10 billion in February 2026 to above CNY 20 billion four months later [3], is characteristic of the 2025 to 2026 embodied AI funding cycle in China, in which capital has consistently arrived ahead of disclosed revenue across the sector.
