DoorDash Air
DoorDash Air is the first-party drone delivery program of the American local-commerce platform DoorDash, announced on 29 July 2026 together with the company's receipt of a US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) air carrier certificate carrying authority to conduct operations under 14 CFR Part 135. The certificate makes DoorDash the eighth drone package-delivery operator certificated under that rule in the United States. As of 31 July 2026 the program had flown no commercial deliveries and DoorDash had disclosed nothing about the aircraft beyond a photograph of its nose section. DoorDash Air is therefore best understood at this stage as a certification and an organization rather than as a vehicle.[1][2][3]

Background
DoorDash was founded in 2013 by four Stanford students. Three of them, Tony Xu, Andy Fang and Stanley Tang, remain associated with the company; the fourth, Evan Moore, left after about 17 months and later became a venture investor.[22][23] Tang announced DoorDash Air in an article titled "DoorDash Air: Beyond the Line of Sight," opening on the three founders who "started DoorDash 13 years ago delivering restaurant food from Tony's Honda Accord."[4] Tang has led DoorDash Labs, the company's internal robotics and automation organization, since November 2017; he was Chief Product Officer only from May 2013 to November 2017, a distinction TechCrunch and FLYING Magazine both got wrong in their launch coverage, the latter also renaming him "Steven Tang."[19][9][7]
The program name is older than the program. When DoorDash and Wing announced the companies' first joint drone pilot in Logan, Queensland, Australia, on 8 November 2022, orders were placed "through the DoorDash Air store in the app."[12] Tang wrote in 2026 that DoorDash had "been in the drone delivery space for four years through our partners," counting from that 2022 Australian pilot, which is closer to three years and nine months. Aviation Week likewise dates the Wing partnership to 2022, while FLYING Magazine dates DoorDash's use of partner drones from the 2024 United States launch; both framings are defensible depending on which market is counted.[4][6][7][13]
Harrison Shih leads the program. His title in DoorDash's own announcements tracks the effort's maturation: Senior Director of DoorDash Labs in March 2024, Head of Product for DoorDash Labs in May and June 2025, and Head of DoorDash Air in July 2026.[13][14][15][1] Trade coverage was inconsistent: Aviation Week called him head of DoorDash Labs and FLYING Magazine called him a senior director of DoorDash Labs.[6][7]
What the FAA certificated
The FAA issues a 14 CFR Part 119 air carrier certificate carrying authority to conduct operations under Part 135; that combination is what drone package-delivery operators hold. The agency's guidance states that "Part 135 certification is the only path for small drones to carry the property of another for compensation beyond visual line of sight," that all applicants must complete the full five phases of certification, and that package-delivery drones must operate below 400 feet.[2]
An FAA spokesperson told Newsweek: "The FAA issued an air carrier certificate authorizing DD Holdings A, LLC (DoorDash) to conduct operations under Part 135, allowing the company to perform daytime drone delivery operations."[3] Two points in that sentence are absent from DoorDash's own materials.
The first is the legal entity: DD Holdings A, LLC, a name that appears in no other coverage. DoorDash's newsroom subheadline instead reads "DoorDash Labs has earned the Federal Aviation Administration Part 135 air carrier certification," while the body of the same post says only that "DoorDash announced that it has earned Part 135 air carrier certification."[1] Aviation Week's line that "DoorDash Labs is the eighth drone operator to receive Part 135 certification" therefore follows DoorDash's own wording rather than departing from it.[6] The two describe different things: DoorDash Labs is the internal organization that built the program, which Mission Local calls a subsidiary of the delivery company, while DD Holdings A, LLC is the entity named on the certificate.[17] For the legal fact the FAA's statement governs. The second point is the daytime limitation, which appears nowhere in DoorDash's announcement.[1][3]
A DoorDash spokesperson described the five-stage process to The Robot Report in more detail than the company published elsewhere, calling the certification "the product of years of engagement with the FAA" that "required us to clear a five-stage federal process: airworthiness testing, detailed flight operations and maintenance documentation reviewed by the FAA, an FAA-accepted safety management system, a hazardous materials program, and more."[5] The FAA recognizes four certificate levels (Single-Pilot, Single Pilot in Command, Basic and Standard); which one DoorDash holds is undisclosed, a gap FLYING Magazine also flagged.[2][7]
Part 135 does not confer BVLOS authority
Despite the title of Tang's announcement, a Part 135 certificate by itself does not permit beyond-visual-line-of-sight flight. The FAA states that operators "must use the FAA's existing Part 135 certification process and obtain an exemption or waiver to provide drone package deliveries using BVLOS."[2] TechCrunch made the same point about DoorDash: flying beyond an operator's line of sight will require separate FAA approval, of the kind Amazon, Wing and Zipline already hold and DoorDash does not.[9]
Part 135 is the only path because Part 107, the small-UAS rule, is structurally barred from this use rather than merely inconvenient. Section 107.1(b)(1) states that Part 107 "does not apply to" air carrier operations, and 107.205 forecloses the workaround: the waiver that would otherwise relieve the visual-line-of-sight requirement carries the proviso that "no waiver of this provision will be issued to allow the carriage of property of another by aircraft for compensation or hire."[25][26] The industry is instead waiting on the FAA's proposed Part 108 rule, which would replace case-by-case BVLOS waivers with a general regime; Aviation Week reported at the time of the announcement that operators were anticipating its release during 2026.[6] It is not final: the docket, FAA-2025-1908 under RIN 2120-AL82, contained exactly four documents as of 31 July 2026, all typed "Proposed Rule," beginning with the notice of proposed rulemaking published on 7 August 2025 at 90 FR 38212.[27] Trade coverage called the rule overdue against a deadline that passed in January 2026, with the draft final rule reaching the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs on 10 July 2026.[20]
What "eighth" counts
DoorDash's newsroom links the phrase "eighth drone operator" directly to the FAA's package-delivery page, which enumerates exactly seven prior holders and assigns explicit ordinals to Zipline (fourth), DroneUp (sixth) and Drone Express (seventh).[1][2]

The ordinal reproduces the FAA's own numbering and is defensible, but it is a definitional artifact rather than a bare fact. What it counts is new air carrier certificates issued for UAS operations, not incumbent crewed carriers that add drones to a certificate they already hold. At least one of those exists: in a revision dated 6 January 2026 the FAA's page carried an eighth, unnumbered paragraph stating that "In Sept. 2025, MAA, Inc., dba Direct2, became the first manned part 135 air carrier to add UAS operations to their certificate," flying Matternet aircraft for on-demand small package delivery in Mountain View, California. That paragraph is absent from the live page, last revised 21 July 2026. The FAA's list is edited and entries have been removed from it, which is worth knowing before treating it as a register.[2][24] The precise claim is that DoorDash is the eighth operator to earn a new UAS air carrier certificate.
Two further caveats. Matternet and Flytrex are aircraft manufacturers whose vehicles fly under other companies' certificates, a distinction popular lists routinely conflate. And the FAA page still omitted DoorDash on 31 July 2026, so even that reading rests on DoorDash's assertion plus the FAA's confirmation to Newsweek, not on the published list.[2][3]
Regulator and company disagree on the record
DoorDash and the FAA gave Newsweek different accounts of how much work remains. The FAA said DoorDash "has not started those operations yet" and, Newsweek reported, that before deliveries can begin the agency must review and approve the company's aircraft and proposed operations, including any required certification, testing and validation. DoorDash told Newsweek that it has already satisfied the requirements associated with obtaining its Part 135 certification and is authorized to operate, and that it has not begun deliveries only because of its own launch timeline.[3]
The aircraft
Almost nothing about the airframe is public. DoorDash says it is "designing an aircraft purpose-built for the gaps we see in local commerce" that "complements the short- and long-range designs our partners are scaling," and that the drone is "American-designed and built, with the majority of components made right here in the U.S."[1] The stated target is mid-range delivery of three to five miles.[1][6] There is no published payload, range, endurance, speed, weight or configuration, and FLYING Magazine reported the aircraft has neither an official name nor a certification timeline.[7] DroneDJ described the aircraft as remaining "largely under wraps," and the only imagery released was a photograph of the nose section.[10][3][7] Whether the aircraft holds a type certificate, a 49 U.S.C. 44807 exemption or a special airworthiness certificate is also undisclosed; the FAA's statement that it must still review and approve the aircraft implies approval remains outstanding.[3]
Stated rationale and company-reported figures
DoorDash's case for drones rests on a gap in its own delivery mix. Every figure below is company-reported, with no published methodology, and is a claim rather than a measurement.

The roughly 30 percent figure deserves particular care and should never be stated as fact. DoorDash has disclosed no sample size, no control group, no methodology and no definition of "some," and the newsroom wording is more guarded than Tang's, which says only that "some businesses saw order volume climb approximately 30% in the weeks following launch." Several outlets repeated it without independent checking.[1][4][8]
DoorDash's explanation for the gap is that matching a mid-length trip to a Dasher takes longer, so routing those orders to aircraft would let couriers stay near dense merchant clusters.[1] Asked by Newsweek whether drones would reduce demand for couriers, it said it expects all three modes to grow ("This is about expanding the pie, not slicing it differently") and that drones cannot handle apartment complexes, alcohol identification checks or complex multistop orders.[3]
Autonomy and the disclosure gap
DoorDash has published essentially nothing about DoorDash Air's autonomy: no detect-and-avoid architecture, no perception stack, no remote-supervision ratio, no BVLOS approach and no statement of how much of a flight is autonomous. Shih's only machine learning remark in the launch materials is general: "Advances in hardware, compute, and AI are creating extraordinary new capabilities for local commerce, and becoming a certified air carrier accelerates everything we're building."[1] The published robotics stack for Dot, DoorDash's road-going delivery robot, is detailed but belongs to a different vehicle and should not be assumed to transfer to the aircraft.
What DoorDash does describe is the layer above the vehicle. The Autonomous Delivery Platform, announced in September 2025 and restated here, assigns each order to a mode; a spokesperson called it "the software layer that routes each order to the most efficient delivery mode, whether that's a Dasher, Dot, drone, AV, or sidewalk robot across our third-party partners," and Tang wrote that it "currently runs Dot, along with Dashers, our third-party partners that plug into our network, and soon our first-party drone program."[5][4] DoorDash also cites SmartScale, a merchant weighing tool meant to keep orders within drone weight limits, an example of AI applied to logistics at the handoff rather than in the air.[1]
DoorDash has been consistent that the aircraft is the smaller problem, arguing that "the harder problem is the infrastructure and integration on the ground: real-time inventory reconciliation, universal handoff systems for drive-throughs, rooftops, or merchant back doors," and telling The Robot Report that this ground layer "is designed to be interoperable across drone providers."[1][5]
Relationship to the partner program
DoorDash Air expands the existing partner arrangements rather than replacing them; DoorDash, Wing and multiple outlets all say the partnerships continue.[6][7][11] One of them, however, had already ended. Australian Aviation reported in an exclusive on 28 May 2026 that Wing withdrew from Australia and that its DoorDash partnership there ended on 16 January 2026, quoting a Wing spokesperson that the company "ceased its drone delivery service in Australia earlier this year to focus on increased demand and the pace of scale in the United States."[28] That is the partnership Tang's "four years in drone delivery" counts from; no launch coverage mentioned it, and it leaves DoorDash's drone footprint entirely inside the United States. The finding rests on a single trade exclusive.

The San Francisco test site and organized-labor opposition
In August 2025 DoorDash leased a 34,325 square foot warehouse at 1960 Folsom Street in San Francisco's Mission District, roughly two miles from its headquarters, to develop aerial delivery systems. A letter to the city's zoning administrator said most testing would happen inside the building with some outdoor flying in a gated area, up to approximately 150 feet above ground, with no more than two drones at once and no flight exceeding 30 minutes. About 200 people were expected to work at the site.[16][17]
The site sits in a Production, Distribution and Repair (PDR) district. At the request of DoorDash Labs, the zoning administrator determined in August 2025 that drone testing qualifies as a "laboratory use," which is permitted in PDR. Teamsters Local 665, which represents more than 70,000 Bay Area workers, appealed, arguing that drone testing is not a defined laboratory use. Union principal officer Tony Delorio said: "This PDR property is meant for blue-collar jobs, but DoorDash is using it to develop technology designed to destroy jobs." The Bay Area Council, the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce and the Mission Merchant's Association supported DoorDash. The Board of Appeals denied the union's appeal on 19 November 2025; on 26 November the Teamsters filed a second appeal arguing that only three of five board members had been present and that it was unclear whether the classification covered outdoor space.[17]
The dispute then moved to the Board of Supervisors, which on 16 December 2025 unanimously passed legislation requiring prior approval for outdoor laboratory operations in the area. Its sponsor, District 9 Supervisor Jackie Fielder, said she wrote it partly to limit DoorDash's ability to "do what they want, when they want" at the Folsom Street site.[18] Most launch coverage omitted this history.
Significance
DroneLife framed the announcement as a vertical-integration move echoing Amazon Prime Air's strategy: build the aircraft, hold the certificate, and treat flight as one transport mode inside a larger commerce network rather than a standalone service. It also noted a structural difference. Amazon controls its own warehouses, inventory and fulfillment, whereas DoorDash coordinates independent merchants, couriers and technology vendors, which makes the orchestration problem harder rather than easier.[8] From 2022 to 2026 DoorDash was a demand-side partner buying flights from Alphabet's Wing and from Flytrex; its own certificate moves it from customer to operator. Newsweek observed that DoorDash is unusual on the FAA's list in having started as a marketplace rather than an aviation company, and set the certification against markets abroad where Meituan has flown commercially since 2021.[3] Nothing has yet been shown in the air, so the case rests on assets DoorDash already owns.
Timeline for first flights
DoorDash has committed only to having "more to share later this year on the aircraft and how our drone program fits into the broader network alongside Dashers, Dot, and our partners."[1] The Robot Report reported that rollout details will come at DoorDash's Dash Forward event in September 2026.[5] TechRepublic wrote that deliveries are expected in fall 2026, attributing that to a DoorDash spokesperson cited by Business Insider; DoorDash's own materials do not state it, and Newsweek reported that the company "has not publicly announced when it expects to begin operating its own drones."[11][3] DoorDash is meanwhile hiring flight test personnel, first-person-view drone pilots and ground support operators in San Francisco.[7]
