Alibaba Quark AI Glasses

RawGraph

Alibaba Quark AI Glasses are a family of camera-equipped smart glasses designed in house by Alibaba Group, sold in China from late 2025 under the Quark (夸克) brand and rebranded to Qwen (千问) in March 2026. Two models make up the line: the S1, which adds a binocular near-eye display built on waveguide optics, and the G1, a cheaper camera-and-audio model with no display. The S1 opened pre-sale on Tmall on 2025-10-24 at RMB 3,999 and was formally launched on 2025-11-27; the G1 opened pre-sale on 2025-12-22 from RMB 1,999.[1][2][3][8] What distinguishes the product from most of the rest of the AI glasses field, and from China's in particular, is not the hardware but the plumbing: the glasses talk directly to Alipay for payments, Taobao for product lookup, Amap for navigation and Fliggy for travel alerts, with the Qwen model family supplying the assistant.[3][5] By spring 2026 Chinese trackers placed the line first in the country's online AI-glasses channel, while Counterpoint Research put Alibaba fourth worldwide in the waveguide segment at 5%.[6][18][19]

Prices in this article are given in renminbi first. United States dollar equivalents are converted at 6.75 CNY per USD, derived from European Central Bank reference rates for 2026-07-31. Dollar figures carried in English coverage of the launch are not reused here: they were converted at the weaker yuan of late 2025, and in some cases from renminbi prices that Chinese launch coverage does not carry, so they do not reconcile with the figures below.

Naming and the Qwen rebrand

The naming is the part most often reported wrong, because the product changed brand between its two model launches.

Alibaba first showed the device at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai on 2025-07-26, where Song Gang, president of the smart-terminal business inside Alibaba's Intelligent Information Business Group, introduced it as "Wow Quark Glasses" (哇哦 Quark Glasses). Song argued that head-worn devices capture about 80% of human perception and that AI glasses could become the most important personal mobile gateway after the smartphone.[9] Both the S1 and the G1 shipped under the Quark name through the end of 2025.

On 2026-03-02 Alibaba announced that its AI umbrella brand would be unified as Qianwen: the Chinese brand became 千问大模型 and the English brand simply Qwen, retiring Tongyi Qianwen as a product name and keeping Tongyi only as the name of the research organization, Tongyi Lab.[10][11] Blue Whale Technology reported on 2026-02-27, citing people familiar with the matter, that the Quark and Qwen glasses were built by the same team with the same algorithms and the same hardware and software stack, and that new series would simply adopt the global Qwen brand.[12]

The rebranded products then reached general availability on separate dates. The Qwen AI Glasses G1 went on open sale (正式开售) in China on 2026-03-08,[4] after all-channel reservations opened on 2026-03-02 alongside a first showing at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.[12] The Qwen AI Glasses S1 followed on 2026-04-15.[13] Pre-sale, formal launch and in-stock general sale are therefore months apart for both models, and the three states are easy to conflate.

The S1's most-discussed engineering choices are the removable battery and the one-piece lens. The battery sits in the right temple and is hot-swappable, so the glasses do not power down during a change; a charging case holding spare cells is sold as a "super battery" bundle.[3] There is no USB-C port on either the frame or the battery, and charging requires folding the glasses and clipping a proprietary charger onto the hinge contacts, which IT之家's reviewer questioned, suggesting a USB-C port on the battery module instead.[5] Alibaba also integrated the prescription correction into the waveguide lens itself rather than stacking a magnetic clip-on in front of it, which is the more common approach in this price band.[5] Temples are 7.5 mm at their thinnest and the upper frame 3.3 mm, achieved with a seven-layer flexible printed circuit; the frame is a titanium alloy dual-material injection molding with 1:1 front-to-back weight balance.[3][5]

Supply was tight at launch. On 2025-12-11 two suppliers said an additional assembly line had been added, with Luxshare Precision increasing temple-component output and the diffractive-waveguide maker Zhige Technology reporting a large waveguide order from the Quark program; the team's stated goal was to have capacity fully released by January 2026 for the Spring Festival selling season.[7] The Qwen G1 sold out across all channels on its first sale day, 2026-03-08, and reverted to pre-sale with a seven-day shipping window.[14]

Assistant and Qwen integration

The onboard assistant was branded 夸克同学 (Quark Tongxue, roughly "Classmate Quark") and woken by saying that name or "Hello Quark" or "Hello Qwen"; it is built on Alibaba's Qwen large language model family together with an in-house MasterAgent model controller, part of Alibaba's AI stack, and IT之家's reviewer found that the glasses lean on the paired phone app for essentially all of that compute.[3][5] Alibaba's material for the Qwen-branded refresh describes the glasses as running the latest generation of the Qianwen large model, with multimodal understanding across voice and vision.[4]

In practice the assistant covers object and landmark recognition, photo question-answering, simultaneous and face-to-face translation (nine languages at launch), meeting notes, memo reminders, teleprompting and general question-answering, with answers surfaced on the S1's display. IT之家's reviewer found multi-intent handling to be the strongest part: a single chained instruction covering weather, a restaurant recommendation and route planning was executed step by step rather than failing.[5] The same review recorded the central limitation, which is that almost everything except stills and video capture depends on a connected phone, leaving the glasses "basically unusable" when the handset is not nearby.[5]

Feature delivery has been through over-the-air updates. The first OTA after the Qwen rebrand, on 2026-04-02, shipped the initial batch of what Alibaba calls "AI 办事" (AI gets things done): phone-credit top-ups, scan-to-ride bike unlocking, parking payment and voice food ordering through Taobao Shangou, plus a homework-solving mode backed by a question bank Alibaba describes as billion-scale, and a multi-speaker interpretation mode that clones the speaker's tone.[15] On 2026-05-08 Alibaba added proactive service to the S1, so the glasses volunteer prompts such as a rain warning before the morning commute, along with what it billed as the world's first spatial 3D display, using the dual light engines for stereoscopic depth rather than flat overlays.[16]

Alipay and the Alibaba ecosystem

The ecosystem tie-ins are the genuinely distinctive part of the product and the reason it is difficult to replicate outside China.

Payment runs through Alipay's "look to pay" (看一下支付) flow: the wearer says a command, the display prompts them to line up a merchant QR code, and payment completes without the phone leaving a pocket. Security rests on a bone-conduction voiceprint check performed by the five-microphone array plus bone-conduction unit, so the system responds only to the wearer, layered on Ant Group's risk controls.[3][5] On 2026-04-04 the glasses were connected to Ant's GPASS platform, extending the same voice flow to shared-bicycle unlocking and return, and to parking-lot entry and exit charges.[27]

Taobao supplies visual product search through its Pailitao image-recognition service, letting a wearer identify an item in a shop and compare listed prices; Amap supplies a customized near-eye navigation mode whose turn arrows rotate with head movement; Fliggy supplies travel reminders.[1][5] The coverage is narrow by design and the review noted that travel notifications reached only Alibaba-owned apps, with no support for Didi or Umetrip.[5] Alibaba said in March 2026 that food delivery, hotel booking and ride hailing from the glasses would follow through the Qwen app, and that international versions would be adapted to Spotify, PayPal and Google Maps.[4][14]

At the 2026-07-31 rate those work out to roughly USD 592 for the RMB 3,999 S1, USD 493 for the cheapest Double 11 S1 price, USD 296 for the RMB 1,999 G1 and USD 518 for the RMB 3,499 Qwen S1. All of the discounted figures depend on China's 2026 consumer purchase-subsidy program, under which phones, tablets and other digital products priced at or below RMB 6,000 qualify for a 15% government subsidy capped at RMB 500 per item.[4][13]

Distribution has been domestic. Alibaba opened what it called the global first store for Qwen AI hardware inside Terminal 2 of Nanjing Lukou International Airport on 2026-04-15, describing the store's glasses as sourced, supplied and assembled entirely within Jiangsu province, and said it would use the site as a template for expansion into major Chinese cities from the second half of 2026.[17] The company has repeatedly said the line will enter international markets during 2026,[4][12] but as of 2026-08-01 no international on-sale date had been announced and no retail availability outside mainland China had been reported.

OmdiaFY2025Global, display-equipped AI glassesChinese firms including Rokid, Alibaba and Even Realities held 71% of 730,000 units[20]

The Chinese channel numbers are strong but narrow. Wellsenn XR's 53% covers online sales only and excludes offline retail; AVC's 30.4% is a share of online retail value in a market where it counted 356 brands selling online, and where January to April 2026 online sales came to RMB 770 million (about USD 114 million) on 413,000 units.[6][18] Counterpoint's own text places Alibaba fourth in the global waveguide segment on 5% and adds that the company "appears well positioned to strengthen its presence in the segment, particularly in China, as it consolidates its smart glasses portfolio under the unified 'Qwen' brand".[19]

One widely repeated figure needs a caveat. IT之家's write-up of the Counterpoint release carried the headline "Xiaomi 28%, Alibaba 21%, Li Auto 3%" for China smart-glasses shipments in Q1 2026.[21] Those percentages are not in Counterpoint's prose. They were read off a chart in the release headed "Smart Glasses OEM Shipments Share by Country, Q1 2026" and sourced to Counterpoint's Smart Glasses Country Shipments Tracker, which sat inside the section on display-less smart glasses, so the 21% is a share of that segment rather than of all eyewear. The release as first published did also say in prose that "In China, Xiaomi (including Mijia) and Alibaba led the smart glasses market during the quarter". That sentence and the country chart were both later removed from the live page, which now says only that distinct regional ecosystems are taking shape in China and India; both survive in an archive capture of the release taken on 2026-06-25.[19][28] Treat the 21% as a chart reading rather than a figure Counterpoint published in prose.

Reception

Chinese hands-on coverage was broadly positive on hardware and skeptical about software maturity. IT之家's week-long review praised the 7.5 mm temples, the 1:1 balance and the 4,000-nit display, and rated the imaging at roughly the level of a RMB 1,000-class phone main camera, useful for point-of-view clips but well short of an action camera. Its listed weaknesses were capture speed and keeper rate, an unpolished interface with no standalone settings screen or brightness key, audible sound leakage above 50% volume, and the phone dependency.[5] Antony Vitillo, writing for The Ghost Howls after trying most of the major Chinese models in June 2026, singled out the Alibaba ecosystem integration as the product's real advantage and confirmed that the green monochrome text stayed legible against a bright sky, while noting that "Alibaba is not used to making hardware" and treating the S1 as a promising first attempt.[22]

The most substantive criticism concerns the closed software model. A commentary republished by 36Kr in November 2025 argued that the S1 shipped without any third-party app store or developer platform, that its pre-installed applications came almost entirely from Alibaba's own services, and that without an open developer ecosystem the device would struggle to hold users over time.[23] That critique has not been answered: as of 2026-08-01 Alibaba had announced third-party Skill and Agent invocation as a forthcoming capability rather than an open store.

Roadmap

At the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference on 2026-07-17, Alibaba said the line would be upgraded to what it calls "agent glasses" (智能体眼镜), able to call third-party Skills and agents on demand, and showed a first agent earbud developed with Bose. The announced technologies are a full-duplex speech architecture that listens and speaks at once, which Alibaba says separates the wearer's commands from bystanders' conversation well enough to cut the false-trigger rate by 90% against conventional turn-taking voice models; eye tracking that turns gaze into an input, paired with an Ant Group iris identity check the company claims has a false-acceptance rate below one in a million; and PPG and temperature sensors for continuous heart rate, blood oxygen and heart-rate variability measurement. Wu Jianjun, general manager of Qwen AI hardware products, framed the shift as designing hardware and agent together rather than grafting a model on afterward.[24][25] None of this hardware is in the shipping S1 or G1: Alibaba said the sensing technologies would appear in an agent-glasses product later in 2026, with the existing models receiving only agent software capabilities by OTA.[24]

Alibaba has also said it will add an AI ring and AI earbuds to the same line during 2026, positioning the glasses as one terminal in a cross-device assistant rather than a standalone gadget.[12] Comparable products include Xiaomi's AI glasses, Rokid Glasses, RayNeo and XREAL devices in China, and Meta's Ray-Ban line and Ray-Ban Display outside it. The always-available camera and microphone raise the same questions covered under smart glasses and privacy; Alibaba's models carry a status indicator light on the temple opposite the camera.[5]
