Snapdragon AR1
Snapdragon AR1 is a family of Qualcomm system-on-chip platforms built specifically for smart glasses. The first member, Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1, was announced on 2023-09-27 alongside Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2, and debuted that year in the Ray-Ban Meta collection [1][3]. Nearly three years later it remains Qualcomm's volume glasses part: as of 2026-08-01 Qualcomm's own device listings attribute Ray-Ban Meta [26], Meta Ray-Ban Display, both Oakley Meta models, and Samsung and Google's new intelligent eyewear to AR1 Gen 1 [7][8][9][10]. That longevity is the unusual part of the story. The camera-equipped glasses category grew substantially between 2023 and 2026 without Qualcomm shipping a successor part, and the one revision Qualcomm did announce, AR1+ Gen 1, has no identified shipping product.
The AR series has three members, and there is no AR1 Gen 2
Qualcomm's AR product index lists exactly three platforms, and the company's sitemap contains no other AR-series product URL [4]. A "Snapdragon AR1 Gen 2" is a common assumption and it does not exist.

The numbering is misleading. AR2 Gen 1 predates AR1 Gen 1 and is not its successor: it is a different architecture for a different device class, splitting work between an AR processor and a co-processor in the glasses and a host device over Wi-Fi, with claims of 2.5 times the AI performance and 50% lower processing power against Snapdragon XR2 Gen 1, support for up to nine concurrent cameras, and on-glass eye tracking [6]. UploadVR described AR1+ at launch as slotting above AR1 Gen 1 but below AR2 Gen 1 [18].
Published specifications
Qualcomm's product brief for AR1 Gen 1 (document 87-86507-1 Rev B) lists the following [2]. One item is conspicuously absent: Qualcomm does not publish a process node for this part, saying only that the platform uses "an advanced process node and an optimized package" [1][2]. The same is true of AR1+ Gen 1 [5].

Qualcomm's Bluetooth claim is internally inconsistent. The AR1 Gen 1 web page says the platform supports "Bluetooth 5.3 and 5.2 wireless technology", while product brief Rev B says it is "qualified against Bluetooth Core 5.4" [1][2]. The brief is the later and more specific document.
The two AI blocks matter more than the headline numbers. The Sensing Hub micro NPU runs the always-on tier, wake word and sensor work, at INT8, while the main Hexagon NPU handles heavier vision workloads. Because the main NPU supports only INT4 and INT8, the practical ceiling on model size is set by quantization as much as by throughput.
Devices using AR1 Gen 1
The strongest available chip-to-product mapping is Qualcomm's own device finder, because in most cases the device maker does not publish the information. Meta named Qualcomm silicon in the 2023 Ray-Ban Meta announcement [3], but Meta's current product pages for its AI glasses do not mention Qualcomm, Snapdragon or AR1 anywhere. Qualcomm does.

The July 2026 Samsung design win is the most significant recent development. At Samsung Unpacked on 2026-07-22, Qualcomm announced that Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 powers Samsung and Google's new intelligent eyewear on Android XR, with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker unveiling two further designs as part of larger collections due that autumn [10]. A platform announced in 2023 took the flagship Android XR eyewear socket in 2026.
Vuzix's OEM catalogue illustrates where AR1 Gen 1 fits. Its Ultralite Pro platform pairs a dual full-colour LCoS display and a CI-30 waveguide with a Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 and a single camera. Its camera-free siblings do not use an applications processor at all: the Ultralite Audio platform is described as a "Bluetooth-connected mobile companion architecture", and the 38 g Ultralite HUD platform carries neither audio nor camera [21]. AR1 Gen 1 is the part you fit when the glasses have a camera.
The TechInsights teardown of Meta Ray-Ban Display, published 2026-06-10, found AR1 Gen 1 as the main processor, an OmniVision LCoS display in the right lens, a Sony image sensor behind the 12 MP ultra-wide camera, and a Syntiant bone-conduction microphone. Display components accounted for 50.8% of the bill of materials, the largest single category. The Neural Band wristband uses a separate Qualcomm QCC5100-001, a part family normally used for Bluetooth audio; TechInsights inferred from the absence of a microphone or speaker that Meta uses it for sensor processing, gesture recognition and wireless [17].
AR1+ Gen 1 and the missing successor
Qualcomm announced AR1+ Gen 1 on 2025-06-10 at Augmented World Expo, without a formal press release. Qualcomm's own material claims a platform 26% smaller than the previous generation, improved power management, better low-light imaging and stabilization, the same third-generation Hexagon NPU label, and the ability to run small language models "completely on glass" for a personal assistant or real-time translation without a paired phone [5]. Camera and display specifications are otherwise unchanged from AR1 Gen 1.
Press figures from the launch briefing diverge. 9to5Google and UploadVR both reported the 26% figure that matches Qualcomm's page, and 9to5Google added an up to 20% temple height reduction that Qualcomm does not state anywhere [18][20]. Engadget reported 28% smaller, which contradicts Qualcomm's own number, along with the same 20% temple figure [19]. UploadVR alone reported 7% lower power; Qualcomm's copy claims only "improved power management" [18].
No design win has ever been announced. UploadVR noted at launch that "Qualcomm didn't announce any specific companies that will use AR1+ Gen 1" [18], and as of 2026-08-01 no entry in Qualcomm's device finder cites the part. Speculation that Meta's heads-up display glasses would be the first AR1+ device proved wrong: that product shipped as Meta Ray-Ban Display on AR1 Gen 1, per both Qualcomm and the TechInsights teardown [9][17].
The identity of the AR1+ demo hardware is itself unsettled in Qualcomm's own material. The body of Qualcomm's June 2025 blog says the demo ran on RayNeo X3 Pro glasses "powered by Snapdragon technology", while the same page's metadata describes it as "local AI inferencing on RayNeo X3 Pro smart glasses powered by Snapdragon AR1+ Gen 1" [15]. Qualcomm's May 2025 blog had identified the X3 Pro as an AR1 Gen 1 device [16], and TechInsights' 2026 teardown likewise lists the X3 Pro as AR1 Gen 1 [17]. UploadVR described the demo hardware as prototype glasses rather than a retail product [18].
On-device versus cloud
Qualcomm's two public demonstrations of AR1-class silicon give different answers about where inference happens, and the difference is worth stating plainly.

Qualcomm's own framing is explicitly hybrid rather than on-device only. The same June 2025 blog states that "whether it's cloud computing, on-device or a hybrid path that incorporates both, the boost in on-device AI capabilities will offer a seamless and ultra-low latency user experience" [15]. The Snapdragon START software stack announced in 2026 is described as connecting the device with companion smartphone apps and cloud services "to support hybrid AI experiences" [12]. Qualcomm sells the orchestration layer, not an on-device-only story.
For AR1 Gen 1 specifically, the workloads Qualcomm actually names as running on the glasses are wake-word detection and always-on audio, microphone array processing and noise cancellation, image and audio quality enhancement, computer vision tasks such as face and facial-landmark detection, visual search, and real-time translation [1][2][3]. Qualcomm makes no on-device large language model claim for AR1 Gen 1; that claim appears first with AR1+ [5]. The May 2025 blog does assert in passing that glasses powered by AR1 "can run multimodal models on-glass, independently from the phone or the cloud", which the demo on the same page does not show: in that demo the model ran on the phone [16]. Where assistants such as Meta AI and Gemini actually run on shipping glasses is not published by the device makers.
Why published TOPS figures should be treated cautiously
Qualcomm publishes no TOPS figure for AR1 Gen 1 or AR1+ Gen 1, on the product pages, in product brief Rev B, or in the 2023 launch release [1][2][3][5]. Any AR1 TOPS number in circulation comes from somewhere other than Qualcomm.
The only Qualcomm XR figure of this kind is "up to 48 TOPS" for Snapdragon Reality Elite, announced in June 2026 [11]. It is an "up to" ceiling with no precision attached, which makes it close to meaningless for a part whose edge AI throughput varies by a factor of two or more between INT8 and INT4. Percentage claims have the same problem unless the baseline is quoted: Reality Elite's "up to 160% higher NPU performance" is measured against Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 [11], while AR2 Gen 1's 2.5 times AI figure is measured against Snapdragon XR2 Gen 1 [6]. The two are not comparable. Qualcomm itself has begun quoting model capacity instead for wearables, describing Snapdragon Wear Elite in terms of billion-parameter models rather than TOPS [14].
2026 announcements that are not AR1 successors
Four Qualcomm announcements from 2026 are routinely mistaken for glasses-silicon news.

XREAL's Project Aura shows why Reality Elite is a different category. XREAL describes a "dual-chip, split-compute architecture" in which a compute puck runs Snapdragon Reality Elite while XREAL's own X1S spatial co-processor in the frame handles low-latency display work [23]. The glasses are tethered, and the product was still listed as coming in autumn 2026 as of 2026-08-01.
Non-Qualcomm silicon in glasses
XREAL designs its own parts. The XREAL X1, which ships in XREAL One and One Pro, is marketed as "the only spatial computing chip on AR glasses" with a claimed 3 ms motion-to-photon latency against "approximately 20-30ms" for software approaches, both vendor claims [22]. X1 and X1S are display and spatial co-processors rather than applications processors, so they do not compete with AR1 Gen 1 directly.
Bestechnic, listed in China as 恒玄, supplies ultra-low-power wireless SoCs of the kind paired with an applications processor in Chinese designs. Its own site lists smart glasses as a product category [24]. A teardown of the Xiaomi AI Glasses published by AR圈 on 2026-03-21 describes a two-chip arrangement in which AR1 Gen 1 acts as the compute hub for vision and heavy AI work through its dual ISPs and NPU, while a Bestechnic BES2700H serves as a low-power co-processor handling connectivity, basic audio routing and the five-microphone array, and acting as the device's power gatekeeper [25]. That identification comes from a teardown, not from Xiaomi.
This pattern is worth distinguishing from AR2's architecture. AR2 Gen 1 is explicitly a multi-chip platform with a Qualcomm co-processor in the design [6]; AR1 Gen 1 is a single chip, and the second chip that appears next to it in shipping glasses is chosen by the manufacturer, which is why it varies between a Bestechnic part in Xiaomi's design and an in-house Qualcomm audio SoC in Meta's wristband. Whether that arrangement holds as the glasses market grows depends on a successor part Qualcomm has not announced.
